November is the end of flea and heartworm prevention treatment in Ontario.  That may not be the case for other areas due to longer seasons and warmer climates.  Pet owners should seek the advice of their veterinarian to determine an effective treatment schedule and know if there is a ‘safe’ period.

When fleas feed, they inject saliva into the skin. Often, these salivary proteins cause animals to end up with an allergic reaction. The most common skin disease is ‘flea allergy dermatitis’: cats and dogs bite and scratch and lose their hair. It can take only a few fleas for this allergy to become a problem.

Fleas are blood-sucking insects.  Pets, especially puppies, can become anemic and possibly die if heavily infested. Fleas also commonly transmit tapeworms to our pets, at least one species.

Ticks transmit a dozen or more diseases than ticks: Lyme disease (humans are also susceptible, and it is not pleasant. I have seen what this disease is capable of), Rocky Mountain spotted fever, tularemia, ehrlichiosis, and more.

My husband and I applied to adopt a dog that was undergoing treatment for heartworm.  The dog went to another family. In doing my research, however, I learned about dogs that have heartworm.  If diagnosed in time, heartworm may be treated successfully. This disease is not something you would want your companion to endure.

Many of these diseases can kill pets. They are entirely preventable with proper treatment which is easy to administer.

Meet Mike, a large four and a half year old Border Collie & Dalmatian Mix in need of a loving, forever home.

This stunning boy has a seizure disorder controlled with medication that costs less than some people spend on coffee each month.

I spoke with two staff members who both agreed:

Mike is an absolute sweetheart

When surrendered to the shelter, he clung to his owner.   Mike loves people and being close to them. He enjoys going for walks before settling in for a cuddle.

Interesting facts:

Lima is the capital of Peru located in the central, coastal part of the country, overlooking the Pacific Ocean. If you travel to Peru, you’ll see llamas everywhere.  Particularly in the highlands. In the Sacred Valley children as young as four and five can be seen with baby llamas, as it is the custom for Peruvian children to raise the llamas for their wool.

The wool produced by a llama is very soft and lanolin-free. They are intelligent and can learn simple tasks after a few repetitions. Llamas are social animals and live with other llamas in a herd.  When used as a pack animal, llamas can carry up to 30% of their body weight for 5-8 miles and are willing pack animals – to a point. An overloaded llama will just plain refuse to move. These animals often lie down on the ground, and they may spit, hiss, or even kick at their owners until the burden lessened.

Using llamas as livestock guards in North America began in the early 1980s, and some sheep producers have used llamas successfully since then. They are used most commonly where larger predators, such as the coyote, are prevalent.

Meet Kilo, an adorable three and a half-year-old pug mix.

Kilo’s person Susan shares his story:

We started fostering him in August 2014 from a lovely organization called ‘Homeward Bound Rescue.’ His foster person of 2 weeks could no longer care for him. He had been through at least three homes before the first foster, so we were number 5. We eventually adopted him, as he became part of the family.

He is funny affectionate and he makes us smile every day.

Kilo arrived poorly house-trained, poorly socialized and very anxious and reactive. However, he has always been the biggest love-bug with the family. He lives on my lap or beside me and gives the best pug hugs. He loves to play games, get massages and chew his toys.

His favorite things in the world are food and me, so I have used positive reinforcement with love, praise, toys, and treats to train him. Kilo is now crate-trained, mostly toilet-trained, and knows approximately 30 tricks and behaviors.  He needs a lot of physical and mental stimulation between snoozes (snoring). We walk, play and train for at least ten minutes every 2-3 hours most days. He still sometimes lacks focus and a reliable recall but every month he gets better. He is a very athletic resourceful jumper and will steal food and “treasure”. Kilo’s definition of food is quite broad and occasionally includes dirty tissues. He likes to check through the recycling and hoards any empty plastic bottles.

Kilo does not like strangers, the mail person or other dogs. However, we have had several breakthroughs the last three weeks. He attended Canadian Pet Expo for an hour and was very well-behaved. Linzy even taught him to ride her skate board. He also had a relatively successful walk with Aria’s puppy Beau and visited his only friend Stan’s house last weekend and was amazing!

Kilo makes my life better and I couldn’t imagine it without him now.

Juliet

Juliet is considered a ‘special needs’ needs pup after losing one of her eyes due to infection.  Born in a Puppy Mill, Juliet, and her siblings did not receive proper medical attention – sadly, the health of mill dogs is not a priority.

The term ‘special needs’ does not mean ‘broken’ or ‘less desirable.’

There is an incredible bond created when working with these dogs.  It takes effort and patience to rehabilitate and socialize them and to gain their trust.  These dogs enter our lives as fearful, neglected and often abused.

Speaking as a pet parent to a Special needs, mill dog, I can say with all my heart:

Contributing to the transformation of a Puppy Mill Survivor, and watching their transformation is the most rewarding experience

Today Juliet is well cared for and loved very much; adored by everyone that meets her.  Unlike that of her namesake, this Juliet’s story has a happy ending.

This post is dedicated to all mill dogs and their saviors.

Red foxes can be found around the world in such habitats as forests, grasslands, mountains, and deserts. They may also dwell on farms, suburban areas, and even large communities.  I have a fox in my neighbourhood.

Due to its resourcefulness, The red fox has gained a legendary reputation for intelligence and cunning.

The sly red fox!

Their coat is brown or gray at birth, and changes during the first month. The coat might not be red at all!  Red foxes may be gold, silver, brown, black or a combination of those colours.  Their thick tail provides balance and protection against cold weather.  It is also used as a signal to communicate with other foxes.

Sadly, Red foxes are still hunted for sport. Hunting season begins soon. Red foxes, are considered nuisance pests by some people and may be destroyed due to concerns about rabies.

Bird enthusiasts flock to Delta, British Columbia Canada.  Located on the Pacific Flyway, Delta is a stopping point for more than five million migratory birds annually.

Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Society OWL, also based in Delta, BC is a society of volunteers dedicated to the rehabilitation and release of injured birds of prey including eagles, hawks, falcons, and owls. OWL conducts guided public tours at the weekend year round and daily tours in July and August.

My beloved Charlie Bear

My beloved Charlie Bear

Our English rose travelled with us from the U.K to Canada and moved house a few times once here.  Nothing fazed this girl!

Charlie was a female tuxedo cat and wore her black and white (cat) suit beautifully – almost until the end.  Sadly, we lost our beautiful girl at nineteen years of age, two years ago this summer.

We miss you Charlie Bear.

In the wild, dogs (and wolves) run in packs.  Every pack has a leader, known as the alpha animal. The alpha makes decisions – they are the boss.  Usually, the pack will have an alpha male and an alpha female. Each pack member has their role in the hierarchy; either dominant or submissive.

It is important to set boundaries and establish rules and routine for our companions. By teaching our dogs manners and socializing them, we are establishing ourselves as the leader of the pack.
