Once again, we are happy to share our honest review and a giveaway of this product, with our followers.

In our previous post, we shared an overview of all the good stuff (nutrients) in Chicken Soup for the Soul Dog Food. We also highlighted all the things you don’t want to serve your pooch.

Henry and Jack are very ‘food’ motivated and will do anything for a treat. Miss Reese however is more selective and doesn’t work for less than the best. Her verdict? Paw’s up!

Chicken Soup for the Soul Pet Food is available in kibble as well as Wet formulas and in several different recipes.

Variety is the spice of life.

Menu Options Include:

Grain Free Dry

  • Beef & Legumes
  • Lamb, Pea, & Green Lentil (Limited Ingredient Recipe)
  • Chicken, Turkey, Pea & Sweet Potato
  • Salmon, Sweet Potato & Pea Recipe

Life Stages Wet Dog Food is available for Puppies, Adults, and Mature Dogs.

Since serving kibble, we have noticed a reduction in the stubborn, remaining buildup of plaque on a couple of Jack’s teeth.

Come on, show us those teeth!

Thank you, Chicken Soup for the Soul Pet Food for inviting my rescues and me to share your product with our followers.

Jack kisses

ISABELLA – AN UPDATE

August 10, 2018 | 16 Comments

Isabella is finally able to relax and be happy

Isabella is in surgery today.

Those of you who read the introductory post will no doubt think I’m referring to surgery for her hips.

A second opinion was sought. I provided video footage of Miss Isabella in action, and additional professionals shared their feedback, concluding it best not to proceed with the hip surgery as it might aggravate the condition further.

I have spent a great deal of time working with Isabella these past months. She is quite chatty and has come out of her shell. Isabella appears happy, albeit a bit stiff.

Isabella sounds like an elephant running around her room at night, playing with her toys!

We have Isabella on an extra-strength joint formula supplement which seems to help overcome discomfort due to her arthritis. I’m happy to have her off medication. Especially, Metacam, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used for pain management.

Metacam (meloxicam) inhibits the enzyme cyclooxygenase which is necessary for the body’s inflammatory reaction. Lower levels of this enzyme means the tissues are less swollen, creating less pressure on delicate nerve endings, therefore causing less pain.

Extended use of Metacam in cats has been associated with acute renal failure and death!

Isabella is having dental surgery, today. In addition to the fractured hips, initial x-rays indicated a broken tooth. After completing the additional assessment and determining we would not be going ahead with the hip surgery, I booked her appointment for the  dental work. I’m sure she will feel much better no longer having toothache.

As you can see, Isabella has undergone a major transformation from the terrified little calico I introduced you to months ago into a beautiful and sweet little cat. Although not a lap-cat, Isabella enjoys fusses on her terms.

Once recovered from dental surgery, we will start to look for a suitable, forever home for Isabella. This will be a home with no dogs (she is not a fan of my three), and at least one other friendly cat. Isabella adores our Ricky. He played an important role in her rehabilitation – demonstrating kitty confidence, and trust in humans. Isabella needs a person, or people, who understand that it will take time and patience to earn Isabella’s trust and that will make the effort to help her overcome her fears and uncertainties.

A heartfelt THANK YOU to all who donated to Isabella’s cause. We raised enough money to cover the cost of her dental surgery and contribute to her supplements.

Thank you Georgina Feral Cat Committee for giving Isabella a second chance.

Foster Mom,

CAT INSPIRED PLATE WALL

July 27, 2018 | 35 Comments

DOG HOUSE DECOR – CAT PLATE WALL

Hang plates on a wall?  Why?

Ricky’s Wall

That’s what I used to wonder.  Until inspired by my work of art by the ‘Crazy Plate Lady.’

“My business is adding personality to peoples homes. When you bring a smile to someone’s face, before they even get to the table, that’s what it’s all about.” – The Crazy Plate Lady

Notice the little red angel on Jacqueline’s shoulder? Or is he the devil? Meow!

I wanted our newly renovated farmhouse to be a ‘modern farmhouse.’ Yesteryear charm mixed with modern colours and patterns.

Canines primarily run my house; toys and dog beds are scattered throughout. I figured why not give Ricky a whole feature wall of his own?

It took months for me to figure out how and where to display my Ricky plate in the new house.  The layout is relatively open-concept, and I wanted a cohesive blend with all the other displays of art in the area: colour, shapes, materials, style, etc.

Colour Theory

Most of the time I go by instinct when it comes to picking accent pieces and colours.  If I like it and it makes my house feel homey, I’m good. I have chosen décor themes for rooms based on the smallest accent piece instead of the other-way-around.  Backwards?  Perhaps.

Sometimes my choices make sense without me having to put much thought into it.  I love when that happens, and I can pretend I knew what the heck I was doing.

My favourite colour is not one of the three primary colours: red, blue, or yellow.  I love the many different shades of turquoise, teal, and sea-foam blue (secondary or tertiary colours). LOVE these blues. You’ll see reflections of this throughout my little nest.

On the colour chart, blue is complementary to orange. Therefore, I figured ginger kitty with blonde highlights would work well with my choice of turquoise and cornmeal yellow plates. The connection between colours only occurred to me as I started laying plates next to each other.

Plate walls are a great, inexpensive way to create an artistic display within your home. I love the look of monochromatic themes but chose to mix some colour in with more traditional, vintage pieces for my arrangement.

This ain’t your Granny’s plate wall!

Two of the plates did, in fact, belong to my Grandmother. I stole the small, shapely, yellow plate and the round, off-white plate from my mother’s cupboard. The remainder of my collection came from local thrift stores, Homesense, and the grocery store (President’s Choice – Everyday Essentials).

LOVE the blues.

If you’re struggling to figure out the look you want, check online for plenty of ideas.  I recommend not being in a rush to create your display. It might be more of a challenge and take longer to match an online design. You will have to find similar plates, colours, and patterns. Coming up with my vision was a test of patience for me but ultimately, worth the wait. I’m thrilled with how my arrangement turned out.

Part of the fun of this project was finding the perfect pieces to tie into my theme. It was a treasure hunt!

Now that you have your concept and plates, it’s time to attach them to the wall.

But first, you might want to trace them out on kraft paper. I picked up several rolls at Dollarama.

  1. Measure the wall area where your display will be featured. If it’s not going to be wall to wall, be sure to mark the area where the template will sit.
  2. Create a template of that space out of kraft paper.
  3. Decide on the layout design of plates and trace around them on the kraft paper. If you’re using similar sizes and shapes, you might want to write a description on your plate outline to note any differences.  Especially if you’re not completing this project in one go. Now, where was I…………..
  4. Wash and dry plates thoroughly, removing any scratches. See below.
  5. Attach your hooks to the backs of your plates according to the direction you will display them on the wall. Yup, that was nearly an Ooops! Glue takes plenty of time to dry. See below.
  6. Measure the distance from the top of your plate to the ‘nail’ area of the plate hanger and mark this on your template.
  7. Tape your template to the wall and insert nails or fixings appropriate to wall type. See below.
  8. Remove the template carefully. You may still need to refer to this as a reminder of which plates go where.
  9. Hang your plates and admire!

Removing scratches

I’m all for ‘charm’ but some of the dark scratches across my light, vintage plates was not the look I was going for.  This was easily remedied by using a gentle yet mildly abrasive cleanser.  I only had liquid Vim which turned out to be abrasive enough.  You could also use Comet, Bar Keeper’s Friend, or good old Baking Soda. Since Vim was in liquid form already, I was good to go.  If you choose one of the other options, you’ll need to add some water to make it into a paste. Then rub the solution into the scratches with a cloth or scrub sponge to remove them.

Hooks

I recommend these hooks – they are durable, easy to use, can be purchased in packs of four or more, and can also be easily modified if your plates are different sizes. I was happy to go larger and take comfort in knowing that Ricky wasn’t going anywhere.  I tried a different brand initially – impatient me didn’t want to wait for these fabulous fixers to arrive.  That ended in a casualty.  Thankfully, I tested the subpar sticky device on an easily replaceable plate. Something to keep in mind.

Disclosure: This blog post contains affiliate and referral links. I may earn a small commission if you use these links to make a purchase. I use these funds to feed my cats. Thanks for the cat food.

Once the plates are clean and dry, decide how you will adhere your hooks on the backs of your plates. Take into consideration any exaggerated rims and ridges.  Directions provided by this company include a workaround for such instances.  Using some water on your fingertips, work the glue into goo and let it sit for a few minutes to become tacky before attaching disc to your plate. Once disc is applied, you don’t have much time to adjust.

Leave to glue to set entirely before attaching them to the wall.

Waiting patiently…..

SIMILAR TO A PHOTO FRAME, MAKE SURE YOU KNOW IF YOUR PLATE WILL BE HORIZONTAL OR LANDSCAPE!

My husband was not so thrilled when I told him my idea for this area of the kitchen.  After all, this brick wall was more than a century old.  No pressure (gulp). This is why I suggest using a template. Special screws were used to fix the plate hooks to the brick wall as standard picture hook nails would not do the trick.

Like it? Please Pin it.

I love walking through my kitchen door and seeing Ricky on the wall.

CHICKEN SOUP FOR THE SOUL PET FOOD – GIVEAWAY

July 10, 2018 | 28 Comments

Because Food is more than just Nutrition, it’s also about comfort, Love and Appreciation ™

#SPONSORED – Disclaimer: Her and her dogs are being compensated to review Chicken Soup for the Soul Pet Food® and share feedback with our followers. The opinions shared in this post are ours, expressed in our words. It is our choice, and our pleasure to share information about this product with you.

Most people will recognize the name Chicken Soup from the much-loved series of books ‘Chicken Soup for the Soul’. My bookshelf is scattered with various titles from the collection.

Chicken Soup for the Soul ® is a family owned and operated business with a brand name that is recognized and trusted worldwide. It is hardly surprising, therefore, that an organization who is dedicated to sharing this much love with their audience has developed a line of healthy pet food for our animal companions.

We were thrilled to be invited to try the product and share our honest review and a giveaway, with our followers.

Before agreeing to do so, however, I needed to do my research.

We switched to a completely raw diet a few years ago due to allergies and sensitivities. I believe it is good to change things up now and then, however, I would not do so with just any product.

I visited the company website and was able to find a Pet Valu in my area that stocks Chicken Soup for the Soul Dog Food.  I was happy to see Protein is First Few Ingredients listed and the product does not contain Corn, Wheat, Soy, Artificial Colours or Flavors, By-Product Meals or Synthetic Preservatives or Fillers.

DOES CONTAIN

– Protein

– Antioxidants

– Vitamin E

– Selenium

– Naturally pure Vegetables, Fruits, and Herbs

DOES NOT CONTAIN

– Corn

– Wheat

– Soy

– Artificial Colours or Flavors

– By-Product Meals

– Synthetic Preservatives or Fillers

My dogs are all under thirty pounds, so I chose the Adult Dog Small Bites. It’s made with the same natural ingredients as the Adult formula, just in a smaller kibble for smaller breeds.

Available Bag Sizes: 5lb, 15lb

Since I will be transitioning Henry, Reese, and Jack onto a new product, I like that I can use the small kibble as treats and training incentives while their systems adjust.

“Wait”

“No More”

They like it too!

Note:

Unless your dog has an iron-gut, it is essential to transition dogs to a new food product gradually. Since we have autoimmune issues and allergies, I will be introducing the kibble progressively.

I believe there is a place for both kibble and raw food – just not mixed in the same meal.  Why?  Dry kibble takes longer to digest and can cause tummy upset when mixed with raw food.

I also like the price point of replacing one raw meal with kibble and the benefit the crunchy kibble has of removing tartar from teeth.

Need more convincing?  Chicken Soup for the Soul supports rescue efforts! In fact, rescue cats and dogs and their story can be found on the product packaging.

We publish books about pets and produce a line of high-quality dog and cat food because we understand the special bond between people and animals. We also know that some of the most meaningful owner-pet relationships begin with adoptions from shelters, which is why we’ve partnered with animal shelters to support their mission to help find cats and dogs their forever homes

Although product is available for Canadian consumers, this particular giveaway is open to residents of the U.S. Enter below to win two bags of treats and a 15lb bag of food from Chicken Soup Pets.

SHELTER SHOTS

July 5, 2018 | Leave a Comment

SPENDING TIME WITH RESCUES

First of all, I would like to thank you for your supportive comments on my previous post. Your kind words were inspirational and helped to remind me why I need to continue on this journey I began, many years ago.  Where does the time go?

As a volunteer photographer, I have snapped pics of many shelter animals in the hope of making a love connection between humoms, dogpas, and their (future) furbabies. Obviously, there is much room for improvement. I enjoy practicing and hope one of my amateur shots versus a quick cell phone pic will mean all the difference in finding a rescue animal a forever home.

Here are some of the companions I’ve had the privilege of photographing:

This trip down memory lane was incredibly therapeutic for me – just the ‘shake off’ I needed to focus on what matters most.

Check back soon for new posts about rescue efforts and how I intend to help eliminate the stereotype about rescues!

Thanks again xoxo

THIS POST MIGHT BE THE LAST ONE I WRITE

June 20, 2018 | 40 Comments

WHAT’S THE POINT?

I am genuinely grateful for my followers and people who share their happy tales with me. However, lately, I feel that my efforts at making this world a better place for rescue animals are a mere drop in the ocean. In some cases, I wonder if I’m wasting my time.

A friend messaged me to say her beloved dog Lacey had not been well. They took her to the vet and determined that Lacey had a massive tumor and it would only be a matter of time before she passed. My heart broke for Laura and Dan. All dog owners and anyone who has lost a beloved companion can’t help but empathize with other pet parents at times like this. Their usual vet was out of town, and they didn’t feel they were given much information, or direction, from the young vet they consulted. Of course not knowing what to do makes these situations worse.

The Perfect Guest

I live miles away and did not want to overwhelm Laura with messages. I would touch base at regular intervals and spoke on the phone with her one particularly difficult evening. I had no advice for this situation and felt useless.

A few weeks later came the news that Laura and Dan had helped Lacey pass. Their vet came to the house, and  Lacey was able to leave this world while her little body rested in her bed.

The couple had experienced grief before. This time, however, the house no longer resonated with the tapping of tiny paws on the tile flooring.

At least, when we said goodbye to Dakota, we still had Lacey. Now there is such emptiness, a huge hole in our hearts

Although I tried to be strong on the other end of the phone, I cried for their loss, too.

On previous occasions, Lacey had come to visit with her people, and she was a perfect guest. The pretty little Lhasa Apso had been with her people since puppyhood and although she had lived a wonderful life, fourteen years was still too soon.

The day after I posted a sympathy note, I learned that Laura’s mother had also passed. I knew this further bereavement, so soon after the first would be completely overwhelming for Laura. Dan would likely struggle to manage his grief as well as provide support to his wife during this additional loss.

I picked out another card and sent it, assuming I would arrive before it did. I planned to make the five-hour drive down to visit, the following weekend. Laura and Dave would be coming to visit us in a few weeks, but I didn’t want to wait to hug her (in person).

I didn’t deliver that hug.

I received another message from Laura, and she seemed happier and more positive than she had seemed in a month (or as much as can be concluded from a text message). She asked me to keep an eye out for a pup or adult Lhasa or Maltese. At the end of the message, she added that they would consider a rescue – followed by a question mark.

Rescue is all I do!

Don’t get me wrong; People are entitled to choose to go through a breeder (hopefully reputable). People may also have a breed, gender, or size preference.

What matters is that they are all loved and cared for.

Rescue Stereotype – photo by Gilly Face Photos

I volunteer for different organizations, I foster, and I fundraise. I’m also a matchmaker.  Some people reach out to me about pets needing to be rehomed and others looking to adopt a pet will ask for my help finding a good fit for them. Therefore, it did not seem strange to me that one of my best friends would ask for my help.  I told her I would love to help her find someone to honour Lacey’s legacy.

My happy bubble quickly burst as I read the next message:

Talking Dan into a rescue might be hard. He knew someone that had a rescue Lhasa, and they regretted it as it bit people

My anxiety kicked in, and I could barely catch my breath. I reread the words to be sure I hadn’t misinterpreted them. Each time, I felt as though my friend had delivered a punch to my gut.

WHEN WILL PEOPLE STOP BELIEVING THE STEREOTYPES ABOUT RESCUE ANIMALS?

As I looked down at my four rescues, all scattered comfortably around the living room; I burst into tears. My pack consists of puppy mill rescues and an abused cat. I worked hard with each of them and would not trade them for the world. Nothing is more rewarding than seeing an unwanted, neglected, or fearful animal learn to trust people and enjoy life.   And they do enjoy life. Very much!

I believe that some people should not rescue. I also believe that some people should not be pet owners. Last-mentioned are people who do not do their research or consult rescue organizations or breeders about temperament, energy level etc.  These are the people that ‘regret it’ and aren’t willing to do the extra work that may be required. I say ‘may’ because not all rescues require rehabilitation.  To be clear, ALL dogs require some amount of work.

I do NOT believe that rescue animals should be considered broken, less deserving, or less lovable than puppies and purebreds.

Regrettably, I lost my cool. A count of ten and as many long breaths in and out did not do the trick.

I messaged back asking if Dakota had been a rescue. I knew full well he wasn’t and I also knew that he had bitten Laura’s housekeeper in the face, taking a piece of her cheek in the process.

Her response: No. None of our dogs were. We paid big bucks for them all.

We exchanged a few more messages before I suggested we change the subject.

I’m not sure which breaks my heart more, the fact that I fell out with a dear friend at one of the most difficult times in her life, or the fact that one of my best friends would make such a stereotypical comment and actually believe it. Especially, as we discussed rescue animals in great length, only last year.

If I can’t change the way those closest to me see the world or rescue, I might as well retire this blog.

Don’t worry; I will never stop advocating for the animals.

RESCUE COFFEE CO.

April 30, 2018 | 26 Comments

MAKE YOUR MORNING MEANINGFUL

For some people, coffee is the essential part of their morning routine.  Some even warn others ‘don’t speak to me until I’ve had my fix.’

For dog people, coffee comes second to the bouncy, good morning greetings and calls to nature (I was referring mostly to the dogs).

The brew starts as soon as my crew is out the door!

At one time, I tried to give it up based on recommendations by ‘the experts.’  I detoxed it out of my system, and admittedly, I did feel less anxious without the caffeine.  That said, the heightened anxiety might have been due to the amount of coffee consumed. I’m okay with a mug of dark nectar before noon.

I’ve done my research, and as far as I can tell, there are more ‘perks’ to drinking coffee than not.  As a migraine sufferer, it was recommended to me by a physician, that I consume coffee at the onset to deter migraines.  It works!  Consistent among the many sites I visited was the additional benefits of memory improvement and aid to prevent Alzheimer’s.  All things in moderation, I guess.  If you need further convincing, here is one more benefit to drinking coffee:  Saving the lives of animals in need!

SIP A CUP, SAVE A PUP!

That’s right!  With every purchase from the Rescue Coffee Co., you are contributing to the welfare of animals in need.

Company founder, Claire Vaughan, has been an animal-lover since childhood and although she has not outgrown her need to help homeless and lost pets, she is more realistic about not being able to keep them all. Claire has combined her youthful dream of helping animals, with her adult ambition of becoming an entrepreneur. Claire shares what inspired her need to contribute to the animals:

Claire and Theo

When I was a child, I was always finding homeless or lost cats and dogs that I would bring home in hopes of being able to keep them.  Usually, they were in a very sad state; malnourished, dirty, and sometimes injured. Most of the time we would be able to find the rightful owner of the lost pet, but the thought of a cat or dog never being able to have the love they deserve by being cared for in a forever home broke my heart.

I have always wanted to own my own business, but it was really important to me that it gave back and support the local communities around it.

About her crew:

(Introduced by Claire)

Nahla: I found Nahla as a kitten wandering around the City of Halifax by herself, very malnourished and sick. I took her in and got her all fixed up, and she’s now a very healthy and happy four-year-old kitty. She’s super friendly and loves to cuddle. She particularly attached to me, probably because I found her when she was only three months old. Finding Nahla almost felt like it was meant to be. She’s really what made me more aware of the issue of stray cats and unwanted animals right in our communities.

Nahla

Theo: My partner and I adopted Theo from the Moncton SPCA when he was seven months old. He’s a border collie, terrier mix and probably a few other things. We’re not sure what kind of situation he came from, but he was a very shy pup at first. He has flourished into a couch loving cuddle monster that just loves people and other dogs. Theo is now two years old and Rescue Coffee’s #1 doggie ambassador.

About the brew:

The idea to start Rescue Coffee came to light when Claire found herself feeling stuck and unfulfilled in a corporate job right after University.

I decided to leave the safety of my job and start a social enterprise around a cause I cared deeply about, helping animals in need.

Claire combined her love of animals with her appreciation for the locally roasted premium coffee. Rescue Coffee came to mind, and soon after, her dream came to fruition.

Rescue Coffee Co. offers fair-trade, organically grown coffee roasted in the Maritimes – a region in Eastern Canada consisting of three provinces. Claire points out that the roasting process is done by a family-run, small-batch roaster in Nova Scotia.

You can purchase the brew online, and it will ship anywhere in Canada and the US for a flat rate shipping fee. Free shipping across Canada for purchases over $100.

The collection includes everything from decaf to espresso as well as mugs and clothing. Packages of mug and coffee are also available. The fun names, along with the flavours are sure to brighten even a Monday morning!

WAKE & WAG – light roast

BLACK DOG ESPRESSO – medium roast

GO FETCH! – medium/dark roast

BARK & BITE – very dark roast

DOWNWARD DOG DECAF – medium dark roast

Coffee Co’s. Partnering animal shelters include:

THE GREATER MONCTON SPCA – takes in over 7,000 animals every year

THE NS SPCA – services rural and urban communities throughout Nova Scotia

SAVE OUR SCRUFF (SOS) – located in Toronto, Ontario, SOS is dedicated to rescuing dogs of all ages, sizes, and breeds. A dog in need is a dog in need.

THE P.E.I. HUMANE SOCIETY – the Island’s ONLY Shelter for homeless, injured and lost companion animals.

Rescue Coffee sponsors these incredible organizations by donating 10% of proceeds from sales to their cause.

When you purchase Rescue Coffee, you are providing fair wages to farmers, supporting local businesses, and giving rescue animals a second chance at life!

I’m not addicted to coffee, but I am completely hooked on my rescue animals. I’m grateful to people like Claire who, combine their passions and give back to their communities and support animals in need.  It has been a pleasure to share her story with you.

Thank you, Claire,

THE ART & HEART OF LETTER WRITING

April 5, 2018 | 8 Comments

MAKE A DIFFERENCE FOR SOMEONE

I remember the days of notes passed in class. If the writer were on the other side of the class, they would have to pick someone to start the delivery process.  Everyone but the teacher was in on this delicious little secret. Would someone tattle?

Love notes were the best! Giggles. For the longest time, I kept those folded up momentos in a shoebox and would reread one or two of them whenever I needed a smile in my day.  My friends and I created these fancy little packages with their folded over corners tucking back into themselves so there wasn’t a need for envelopes, it was all-in-one.  The notes, written in pencil, coloured pencil, marker, or ink contained anything from poetry to a few scribbled words with doodles. It doesn’t matter what the note contained, or what medium the writing, receiving these notes was always fun.

After I left for school and moved away from my friends and family, I especially appreciated receiving delightful envelopes and packages from loved ones.  The effort made on some of the envelopes alone would send me rushing to my abode, eager to open my postbox treasure.

I still have a few cards that were given to me by my grandmother. I always forget where I put them and when I come across them again, it warms my heart to see my name in her handwriting, written on the envelope and portraying a sweet message inside the card

Sadly, it seems those days are long gone. We are all so busy with life that we forget or don’t take the time to remember the people we care about the most.  Facebook kindly reminds us of upcoming birthdays, and although it’s nice to read the well-wishes in post form, or receive emails, nothing beats a well-thought-out card or note. How many birthday cards do you still receive?  How many do you send? Do you know the address of any of the people on your friend list?

Yes, the internet has made it possible to reconnect with people we had been out of touch with, and I am grateful for the many online conversations I have had with long-lost friends, as a result.

In my last post, I shared a fun, creative, paperless option. This option enables the sender to design something more personal than an email or Facebook post.

As an animal welfare advocate and volunteer, these tangible, paper gems mean more than most people realize.

Hallmark Notecards

Some days and weeks can be tough. We deal with desperate situations and listen to countless stories that would break most people’s hearts. That little envelope would go a long way to help someone who might be suffering from compassion fatigue

Even a bad day can be made better knowing someone is thinking of you

I believe it is as therapeutic for the sender as it is for the recipient. There is just something about sitting down to write a card or a letter. I’m not talking about ‘group’, or ‘brag’ letters.  I’m talking about something special intended for one recipient.

I haven’t written Christmas cards in several years; I keep meaning to get back to this practice but sadly, have not. I don’t want to scribble my name on a pile of cards – Christmas is about more than that.

To me, this is less personal than a text or a tweet in which we fill the conversation with punctuation or emojis, instead of saying much of anything. We rarely share glimpses into our true lives these days.

People cause accidents by texting while driving, and I admit; I am guilty of sitting beside my husband at a bar, both of us with phones in hand catching up on our news-feeds. We don’t pause long enough to reflect. To be in the moment, individually, or to connect with others.

I feel that Christmas cards should still be personalized. Even just one or two lines such as:

Hi Jane, I heard you are expecting early in March………Congratulations! Dan and the boys must be very excited. You’ll have to make room for another stocking on the mantle.  Happy Holidays to you all xoxo

I used to start my Christmas cards in October. Crowds make me anxious, so I finish my shopping by Canadian Thanksgiving, and after that, I start preparing for Christmas.  One or three cards a night with a cup of tea or glass of wine and some music.  They may not be there physically, but I feel as if I’ve connected with friends instead of rushing through a task.

For those of you just visiting, my pack moved house in November. It was a crazy time.  No cards, no Christmas.  I could not bear to look at one more box!  I did not have time to sit and write cards.

So………………..I decided to surprise people with springtime notes!

Michael’s Notecards

Check your mailboxes people – you might be receiving something other than bills and flyers very soon.

It is such a wonderful feeling to know you have made someone’s day with something as simple and easy as an ‘out-of-the-blue’ note, or card.

Who will YOU write to?

PAPERLESS POST

March 16, 2018 | 16 Comments

A CREATIVE AND CONVENIENT SOURCE FOR CARDS, INVITATIONS, AND MORE…

#SPONSORED – Disclaimer: Her and her dogs are being compensated to review Paperless Post® products, and share feedback with our followers. The opinions shared in this post are ours, expressed in our words. It is our choice, and our pleasure to share information about this product with you.

I am a card girl.  I have a drawer FULL of paper cards. Sometimes finding the perfect card is NOT easy. Or, the selection for certain occasions is very limited. I buy these little treasures not only when an occasion is on the horizon, but when I come across them. The perfect card that reminds me of someone, or, simply because I loved the message and knew I wanted to share it.

I would not have been able to purchase this in the shops!

The drawback to purchasing cards so far before an occasion is that I have, at times, completely forgotten about them! Another challenge, I’m sorry to say, is our postal service. I write and postcards at least one week before an occasion, and still, they have sometimes arrived late, or are not delivered at all!

Paperless post is an online source for ANY CARD, INVITATION, OR FLYER you could possibly need. And, some you don’t need that are fun to send anyways.

HOW IT WORKS

The first step is to create an account by entering an email address and creating a password. You purchase ‘coins’ from Paperless Post, and each card costs a certain number of coins. The coin price (per recipient) is based on the options you have chosen. Options include envelope liners and card inserts; these can be added or removed. Coin packages can be purchased when you are ready to send your post.

CHOOSE YOUR DESIGN

Once your account is activated, you can select the occasion you need a card for, or browse the categories for general inspiration. You can even click on, and save the designs you like, to your ‘favorites’ folder (it’s indicated by a heart icon).

Categories include:

-Birthday

-Wedding

-Parties

-Professional

-Cards

-Flyers

Each of these categories has sub-categories! Like I said, any card. And the best part – you can create your cards or invitations right from your home office. No need to drive from shop to shop looking at cards.

MAKE IT YOUR OWN

Once you have determined the category of your occasion, select a template and have fun trying different layout options. Paperless Post is a playground for those who love to create, and a great place for those needing inspiration and direction. You can change many elements of your design: backgrounds, colours, fonts, envelope styles. You can even choose a stamp design.

INCLUDED IN THE COLLECTION ARE CREATIONS FROM DESIGNERS SUCH AS KATE SPADE!

Having recently moved, my husband and I decided we would like to have some friends over to help us celebrate and check out the new place. I selected ‘Housewarming party invitations’ and was immediately directed to the relevant pages of options.

We have a custom-made bar in our home, so I searched (yes, you can), specifically for cards with ‘bar’ themes. Photo cards are also an option within all categories to add a personal touch.

MANAGE YOUR EVENT

Event page settings allow you to show your guest list and add a comment wall.

We’re so excited to see everyone and show you our new little spot in the country.

Please leave a message on the comment wall!

Include additional information for your guests:

A buffet of salad items and cold appetizers will be served, as well as beer, wine, and non-alcoholic beverages.

Please park vehicles along the side of the driveway.

Housewarming gifts are unnecessary. If you must bring something, please consider food for the birds, a song to share with them, or a plant for the land.

Thank you

Housewarming

Here is another example I created:

I was delighted to see the many vintage-inspired artworks included in the collection!

The only difficulty I experienced was having to make a decision!

SO…..MANY….CHOICES!

ISABELLA WANTS TO LIVE!

March 7, 2018 | 24 Comments

WE NEED YOUR HELP!

Dear Animal Lovers,

We are reaching out for your help. Beautiful, five-year-old Isabella is in desperate need of surgery! The cost of surgery will cost between $2500 – $3000. Donations required (and much appreciated). Please help us save her life!

Isa

It was during her spay operation the Vet discovered the trauma to Isabella’s hind end. Usually, during spay surgery, the team will straighten an animal’s legs, allowing them greater access to carry out the procedure. They could not bend or stretch either of Isabella’s back legs – at all.

X-rays were performed, and the extent of her injuries was discovered; both hips were badly broken. The orthopedic surgeon determined that surgery was required for her to have a good quality of life.

At this time, the veterinarian has prescribed medication which, cannot be used long-term as it will cause other issues including organ failure.

Isabella needs surgery, and we need your support to make that happen!

Georgina Feral Cat Committee is an organization that focuses on TNR efforts to reduce the overpopulation of feral cats in the community. The organization fosters, rehomes, and provides medical care for cats, and their kittens that are born before they have had the opportunity to spay or neuter the adult cats in feral colonies.

Overpopulation is a concern in most communities. These efforts require human resources and significant funds to make a difference. Although this case is outside their usual practice, Georgina Feral Cat Committee did not want to see Isabella euthanized, believing that ‘All Lives Matter.’

We just had to try to help her and cannot use funds that have been earmarked and raised for TNR efforts (Trap, Neuter, and Return)

There is a solution, but it costs money. Please donate today – every little will make a difference to Isabella and the feral cats being cared for by this organization.

We believe that, at one point, Isabella was a beloved family pet that found her way outside and was hit by a car. The trauma to her hind end is severe and will require significant surgery on both hips. As a result of the injury, and despite the option of having surgery, Isabella has arthritis which will require long-term medical treatment.

When I first met Isabella at the animal shelter where she had been residing for more than four months, she was so utterly terrified, and, as we now know, in such pain, I was unable to open her cage without having her hiss and lash out and scratch me. Thankfully, Georgina Feral Cat Committee saw the determination demonstrated by this little cat and agreed to request the shelter sign her over to their care.

Isabella wants to live!

During the three weeks that Isabella has been in my care, I have seen a significant improvement in her disposition. Her eyes look at me softly, and she is relaxed and comfortable. Initially, Isabella would not come out of her hide-a-box for treats, but clearly, she enjoyed them as they were all gone when I next visited. It didn’t take long until Isabella would come right out for her treats and would remain out of hiding to eat her meals (full meals when at first, she barely ate).

Isabella has found her little voice and can be quite chatty. I see hope in her eyes and hear the gratitude in her voice. Isabella’s personality is starting to show. She is a cheeky madam, tapping my fingertips as if to say ‘you can drop those right there, thank you.’ I can’t wait to see what other traits she shares with us in the near future.

I will continue to work with Isabella over the next few weeks. However, even though Isabella is finally receiving medical treatment for the pain, this isn’t a long-term solution as she cannot be treated with strong pain medication for the rest of her life.

It is clear that, with pain management, love and patience, she is starting to trust again. I can’t wait to see how much her personality shines once she has had the necessary surgery to relieve her from extensive pain.

Your support will give Isabella the opportunity to enjoy a good life. Please help her to get the surgery she needs to be able to thrive in a loving home.

Isabella is a fighter, and we believe she deserves to be comfortable and experience love, again. She deserves a chance! Please, help us help Isabella. Donate today!

Email transfer or PayPal payments accepted by Georgina Feral Cat Committee email address is georginaferals@gmail.com.

TAX RECEIPTS ARE AVAILABLE if donations are sent by email transfer to paws@pawsofgeorgina.com. Cheques also accepted by PAWS OF GEORGINA  . Full name and address required. Please state that donation is for Isabella.

Thank you,
Georgina Feral Cat Committee
& Foster Mom,

SEAN O’DANIELS ART

February 21, 2018 | 31 Comments

FEATURED ARTIST INTERVIEW

Before he was recognized for his uplifting and colourful pet portraits, Sean O’Daniels was a professional concept artist and art director.  He visually developed the backstories for characters in games and film, creating the look and feel of characters and the environments in which they appear.

The inspiration behind the addition of pet portraits was Sean’s rescue dog, Rocky. Until Sean created his series of paintings with Rocky as his subject, he had never considered pursuing his own art.

Sean says,

If you own or used to own a dog, you understand how much they impact our lives. The silent bonds and stories we share with them inspire us to be better people

In between work projects, Sean would paint Rocky. He was determined to capture not only Rocky’s likeness but also, the personality of his beloved dog and everything he felt Rocky represented:  Loyalty (Rocky carried everything, including Sean’s wife’s purse.) Confidence (his short legs and stature never limited him). Most of all, Rocky taught his people to trust, to believe in themselves and never doubt or give up on their dreams.

A Girl’s Best Friend

The last lesson was the most difficult, painfully realized upon Rocky’s passing in 2016.

The night Rocky died I began to paint the stories and personalities of other pups, giving those silent bonds and stories a voice. Other than writers, I don’t know of many others who can articulate what dogs mean to their people.

What about me?

Although he occasionally does use traditional acrylic on canvas, Sean’s primary form of art is digital. That way, pet owners don’t have to commit to a fixed canvas size or high price. The digital artwork, in various sizes, is available to pet owners and other consumers, online. Sean paints and sketches directly onto his iPad or stylus and the process of layering is demonstrated through Instagram videos.

Also on Sean’s Instagram account are the cutest pics of rescue dog, Toby. Chiweenie Toby joined Sean’s family a little more than a year after they lost Rocky.

Digital format gives artists the freedom to experiment and explore but when you work with other mediums, you need a game plan, and it can take months to create a piece. Working digitally is less constrictive says Sean, he doesn’t have to stay within the confines of a reference photo.

When asked about his ‘favourite place to create’, Sean shares that he likes to move around and becomes creatively stagnant if he has to show up and the same place to create. Another advantage of working digitally.

Sean does not just paint pet portraits. For him, it’s all about capturing the character and the story. The ‘narrative.’

To qualify a dog as one of Sean’s subjects, potential clients are asked to share a unique idea about their companion and provide photos that demonstrate a distinguishing characteristic or quality. Once he is ‘jazzed’ about a project, Sean requests a deposit and arranges a further discussion to share ideas and combine elements and explore and develop subtleties that might not have been fully expressed initially.  Anything that will make the piece as unique and personal as possible.

Upon completion of the project, clients choose whatever size of artwork they want, up to 30 x 30.  There are no ‘originals.’ Even when Sean creates an acrylic on canvas piece, he rarely sells an original, so to keep the cost down for his customers.

Some people see their pets as objects. They don’t see their pet’s true personalities, or recognize what they have to teach us or appreciate that they even have a story.  These people just want a picture, and there are a million artists who will just paint a picture for them.

If people aren’t able to convey the narrative, Sean will decline their commission as he does not believe it will turn out well. Some individuals find it difficult to communicate this information.

It’s funny, says Sean, some of the stories we share are maybe not ones we consider unique, but when I get my clients to open up, they tell me things they haven’t even shared with their closest friends. The bonds they have with these animals are unspoken, and during our consultation, it’s the first time they’re sharing with another person.

These are the things that get me fired up and that I want the artwork to express. Each time they show the piece to people, they have a story to share; there’s something in the composition that represents a unique trait (of their companion).

We think our stories aren’t unique. However, it’s amazing how many people visit the site, see a photo, and they get it! They totally get what that dog is about!

Sean was contacted about having one of his pieces licensed to be used in the backdrop of a scene in a movie! The piece was of an Irish Terrier with a pint of Guinness. The subject, a family dog, named……………………………yup, you guessed it, Guinness!

That’s the coolest thing; that people relate to my pieces.

Thanks, Sean

FIRE SAFETY – TAKE TWO!

February 9, 2018 | 19 Comments

CONTINUED FROM LAST WEEK…

(spoiler alert: post contains quotes from, and references to, the award-winning television show ‘This is Us’)

In a previous post, I wrote about a neighbour’s house burning to the ground in the early hours of the morning. Our dogs sleep with us, and we were alerted by Reese before the fire engines even arrived. Thankfully, the woman and her two daschunds escaped the fire. The dogs took flight, and as our neighbour was rushed to the hospital, the dogs were rounded up by animal control and spent the night at the animal shelter. In this story, everyone was safe.

Sadly, that is not the case for so many families – most recently, the Pearson family. I know it is a television show, but still, my heart broke, and the tears flowed. Okay, it was a snotty, ugly cry! Hearing Louis barking inside the burning inferno, and watching the faces of his people was too much for me. And later, in the hospital when he says to the Doctor

I really love the girl that loves the dog

Seriously, who could hold it together?!

The questions going through my mind: why wasn’t Louis in Kate’s room? Why didn’t he bark sooner? Why didn’t Jack just grab the dog and get the heck out of there instead of going on a treasure hunt?

You can’t rewrite an ending in real-life!

We can overcome the loss of material things even though they may be sentimental and perhaps irreplaceable. Firefighters will, of course, advise us not to enter a burning building to rescue a pet. I will do everything in my power to avoid my pets, and myself, of course, being in that situation in the first place. My family (including furries) is what matters most to me.

What if my husband and I weren’t home and a fire started? Thankfully, I do have a sticker for the window in our front door which indicates, for rescuers, that three dogs and a cat live here. As soon as I meet our new neighbours, I will introduce them to the pack, and permit them to smash whatever they need to in order to free my companions from the house, should they see smoke coming from our house and suspect fire.

I am paranoid about leaving appliances on, and keep most things unplugged unless in use. Also, it may seem obsessive compulsive, however, when I use anything with heat; hair straightener, oven, iron, I will unplug or turn off the appliance. I make sure it’s secure, and after double-checking the electric socket or stove top, I visualize the plug out of the socket and say out loud to myself
unplugged and safe

By safe, I mean the appliance is not accessible to my pets, and they can’t knock it over.
I also rarely use candles – too easy to forget about or knock over (especially with animals running around).

There is nothing worse than that feeling of uncertainty. The feeling that turns your stomach upside down.

Smoke Alarms

-you can never have too many smoke alarms. Install alarms on each level of the home and in every sleeping room as well as outside sleeping areas. Larger homes require more alarms.
-interconnect alarms. When one goes off, they should all sound.
-ensure alarms are properly installed and maintained. Change your batteries regularly. Pick a day that stands out so you won’t forget. For example, New Year’s Day.
-test alarms monthly.
-alarms should be replaced every ten years (mark the year on your calendar each December 31st).

Electrical: faulty wiring, and circuit disruption.
Heating: more likely during winter months (December – March).
Smoking: need I elaborate?
Children: playing with matches, lighters, etc.
