As Canadians, we look forward to and appreciate the warm weather when it finally arrives. I’m not a skier, I don’t own snowshoes, and my idea of fun is not sitting in a little tent, on the ice, waiting for the fish to take my line.
WHAT I LOVE ABOUT SUMMER:
Pool parties and BBQ’s (I take a hearty salad for myself and as a side for my meat-eating friends), spending time on Lake Simcoe, biking, hiking; green walks along the trails, concerts in the park, picnics, outdoor movies and so much more!
We adopted Jack at the end of last summer. Up until then, he had lived a ‘sheltered’ life. Worse than that; he was a mill dog and summer to him meant sweltering heat with not even a fan for relief. He was confined to his crate where the stench of urine and feces was intensified by the warm weather. We only had him for a couple of months before the first snow arrived. In that short time, although we worked with him every day, Jack was still too fearful to appreciate his environment (indoors or outdoors).
Slowly but surely, Jack transformed into a more confident and very happy dog. He LOVED the snow and would fly around the garden. The transformation from black to white dog took only a few laps.
Jack has been to Florida twice now and seems to enjoy the sand and sea almost as much as the snow.
This summer will be Jack’s first time on a boat or a kayak!
Before we share these experiences with him, we need to put some safety measures in place. First, and foremost we need a Dog Flotation Device. Believe you, me, and Henry, these are not all created equally.*

Comfort AND safety!
Jack is very ‘Poodle-chested.’ One of the features that I appreciate about the EZYDOG DOG FLOTATION DEVICE is the unique ultra-buoyancy foam that is strategically positioned to keep dogs in a natural swimming position at all times. They don’t have to work extra hard to keep themselves in this position.
Also, the DFD™ was designed and has been tested extensively, to provide an ergonomic and comfortable fit for your dog. Cumbersome and restrictive jackets can be discouraging and make dogs less confident in the water. As this will be Jack’s first trip out on the boat, we want him to be as happy as possible.
The EZYDOG DFD is available in two stunning colours; red, and yellow.
If you spend time in the water after dark, you will be pleased to learn the device is also reflective and includes an ergonomic grab handle and super strong D-Ring. This means we can easily secure the dogs onboard when the boat is on the move and place them in the water for a swim when we stop. The handle also makes it easier to lift them out of the water when they want back aboard. Only Henry has figured out how to use the steps.

Stylish Water Gear
For weenie dogs, like Reese, check out the DFD MICRO. This floatation device was designed specifically for dogs under 7kg/15lbs.
*Please be sure to select the appropriate device and size for your dog based on weight. Size is determined by measuring the length and girth. Also, be sure to monitor your dog’s girth at the beginning of each season. Henry’s previous life jacket did not allow for winter weight gain, and it did not provide him with enough support the following summer. He made a bit of a splash, last year!
We also love the NEO CLASSIC COLLAR for summer. It is made from neoprene, the fabric used in wetsuits. Neoprene is a very durable material that does not absorb oils and dries quickly, so it does not get stinky like a regular nylon collar. Wet dog smell is one thing, but the smell of wet dog collar is gross. Ya, you know what I’m talkin’ about!
Because the fabric is soft, it is more comfortable for your companion than a plastic, waterproof collar. The extra wide version of this collar, NEO WIDE, is also available for larger dogs. Both options are available in a variety of colours and fun patterns.
It’s hardly surprising that EzyDog provides award winning active dog products. Founder and CEO Luke Hatcher’s experience includes working in the water sports industry as well as a passion for surf, adventure, and his Border Collie ‘Roger.’ Luke invented and made a few bungee cord dog leashes which were a hit with his friends, who told their friends and so on, and so forth. Before long, Luke was selling more than he could produce and EzyDog was born.
We strive to be at the forefront of innovation for the active dog enthusiast

Thank you, EzyDog,
My girls live to go kayaking down the river
Fun! Jack is probably a bit too anxious for a kayak just yet. Hopefully next summer!
What marvellous product to keep your dogs safe on the water. I really hope Jack enjoys his summer of watery fun. Also I’m so pleased that he found you and your family, it sounds like you are absolute gems who are looking after his needs so well.
Thank you, Juliet. We feel blessed to have found Jack.
As a fellow Canadian, winter is not one of my favourite times of the year either! However, I have sat on a frozen over lake, holding a fishing rod, lets just say that was an experience 😉 Now summer time is a great time for us and our dogs. Lots for everyone to do and enjoy especially for dogs that love the water! I really like this floatation device and recommend every dog to wear one because believe it or not, not all dogs can swim! The waterproof collar is a super idea!
Great point, Kelly! Bulldog is one such breed.
The Ezdog life jacket looks amazing. We too believe in floating devices when boating. I love the design and quality of that one. Very sharp.
I like to think the model showcases it well lol.
Beautiful website. While we do live near the ocean and two rivers, I rarely take my dogs boating. Occasionally they’ll frolic along the edge of the ocean during off season. However, I do strongly believe that dogs should wear life vests. These sound like great products!
Thank you, Heather. I have been admiring your site also! Sounds like you live in a beautiful area – your dogs are spoiled for choice.
Love the fact the collar is waterproof and dries quick. Regular wet collar smells horrible. My dog would enjoy this, more reassurance for safety around water
That smell is the worst!
This is a post that resonates with me. I live by Lake Michigan and see many boaters with their pets. Most do not have a life jacket on them. I like the collar – will have to check into it myself.
Yikes! It’s not worth taking the chance.
We are getting a pool and taking them on a lake trip this summer. So I totally need to get lifejackets for the dogs. Neither of them actually like water much though!
Accidents happen. It is definitely worth the peace of mind.
When is the pool party? 😉
This is so cool!! What a great product for doggies who swim. It must be nice not to have to worry so much about their safety in the water.
Things happen quickly. Having this safety measure in place might make all the difference.
This is so awesome! I’ve been looking for a good life vest for my cats for when we go canoeing or kayaking. The ones we have are okay, but they don’t have a hook to attach to a leash, so I always have to put their regular harnesses on underneath, which makes everything bulkier and hotter. I just checked and they have sizes small enough for my cats I think! I’m definitely going to give these a try!

I knew you would like the micro’s! 😀
I love the idea of flotation devices and we did get “life jacket” for Jasmine. I do wish, though, if they came up with something less bulky and cumbersome. But, safety first. Always.
You should look into these, Jana. I found this device less bulky and not at all cumbersome.
A good life jacket is so important! I’m glad to see they have sizes for the “micro” dogs. They can be hard to find.
Yes, hard to find. These flotation devices fit well.
My dogs love swimming in the water. Every year at the end of the season and our local pool has a doggie dip. Dogs are free to swim in the pool before it closes for the season. It also acts as a fundraiser for a local animal shelter. We stay until the dog start pooping in the water and I gets gross. All in all it’s a fun time for a good cause.
I was excited until you mentioned the poop lol. Seriously though, that is a great idea!
I wouldn’t want to be the person cleaning the pool.
Although only one of my dogs enjoys the pool, another one loves to be in canoe or kayak. This sounds like a great flotation device.
All fun summer activities!
Wow, Jack had a really tough life before you rescued him! I’m do glad you’ve given him such a beautiful, happy life. This vest looks great, I love that it’s reflective too! Great feature.
Love & biscuits,

Thanks, Cathy. Jack is a happy dog and we enjoy watching him experience these new adventures.
Up until now, my three rescued Treeing Walker Coonhounds have mostly splashed around in a small pool I have set up for them. I’ve been wanting to take them out to the Indiana Dunes and let them swim in Lake Michigan, but they’d definitely need something like this since the water isn’t as calm as their pool is.
That sounds like a fun venture!
It’s imperative appropriate safety devices are used with dogs when they are near the water. We have a lot of lakes around us and I’ve seen too many dogs in boats without jackets on.
It makes me cringe. It’s the same as dogs bouncing around in the back of trucks 🙁
they are not around water much except the water hose. so they like to play with the water hose.
I love watching dogs attack water from the water hose lol.
What a great review! We only have one swimmer, and he’s getting old so a lifejacket is even more of a need this year! Always better to play it safe!
Absolutely, safety first! So glad your older fellow is still swimming.
Aww I’m happy that this product has allowed Jack to have a brand new experience in summertime. He’s very blessed to have been taken in by you and have a chance at a happy forever home with new adventures and positive experiences.
Thanks, Kamira. Jack is so much fun and with confidence his character will develop even more.
Swimming and splashing in puddles haha 🙂
Fun!
Summer is a great time with dogs. But You should Keep Your Pet Safe In The Summer. Thanks!
Yes. There are many hazards we need to be aware of.
